Nevertheless, if there is a delay of more than 4 hours for a flight of 3500 km or more; delay of 3 hours or more in intra-community flight of 1500 km or more; and delay of 3 hours in case of flight under 1500 km, the passenger is entitled to claim compensation under EU norms as set by EU Regulation 261 of 2004. This entitlement is when the delay is not caused by extraordinary circumstances.

  2. And over 1,500 km, you can claim up to 400€

  2. If the distance is between 1,500 – 3,500 km, then you can claim up to 400€
  3. And if the distance is more than 3500 km and flight delays for more than 4 hours, then you can claim up to 600€

Note: If you are travelling to a Non-European country from a Non-European country by a European Flight, EU 261 Rule won’t apply to you. It is only applied in the case of EU based flights travelling within Europe or to or from an EU Member State.

Am I Eligible To Claim Compensation?

Useful Information about SAS Group

One of the oldest airline group, SAS Group also known Scandinavian Airlines System established in 1951 after the merger of the three Scandinavian flag carriers ABA, DDL and DNL. The airline is also one of the founders of Star Alliance in 1997 with Air Canada, Lufthansa, Thai Airways International and United Airlines.

The airlines’ headquarters is at SAS Frösundavik Office Building in Solna, Sweden. This airline company was also the first to launch the Amadeus Computerised Reservation System in 1965 which is widely used for reservations of passengers around the globe.

The airline was the first to start many of the services such as flying the polar route from Copenhagen to Los Angeles scheduled services in 1954 & in 1957 it became the first airline to offer “round the world service over the North Pole.” i.e., Copenhagen – Anchorage – Tokyo.

In 2012, the Scandinavian Airlines System, SAS, carried about 25.9 million passengers collecting revenue of SEK 36 Billion and making it the 9th largest airline across Europe.

austrian flight

In order to gain control over the market, SAS started taking full or partial control of the local airlines such as Braathens and Widerøe in Norway, Linjeflyg airline and Skyways Express in Sweden and Cimber Air in Denmark. It also had brought shares of Spanair, the now defunct airline of Spain.

With the formation of low-cost airlines and with the fares decreasing, SAS found it hard to sustain itself. In order to get in the game, SAS started selling stakes of all the third companies that it holds such as Spanair, AirBaltic & BMI (British Midland International).

In 2012, the airline came under immense pressure from its owners and bank to carry out heavy cost cutting which led to the fall out between the management and trade unions. The negotiation took longer than expected but eventually the airline sorted them and kept the airline flying. The airline Blue1 belongs to CityJet since 2015.
